Road Safety Update: King Abdullah Monument Road

Multiple road traffic accidents involving high-speed racing and underage driving have been recorded on the King Abdullah Monument Access (KAM) Road. Identification of contributing factors supported the joint development of immediate and long-term mitigation measures by the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Campus and Community, Government Affairs and Security departments.

In addition, increased education and awareness efforts were carried out. These included targeted correspondence to parents highlighting the issues faced along this stretch of road, a community-wide reminder on road safety and regular posts on The Lens and other channels available to the community.

What we are doing

Further action is however required, as unsafe driving persists along this road. KAUST is taking coordinated action and implementing the below in response:

• Traffic calming measures: Speed bumps along the KAM Road to reduce speed will be introduced.
• Road patrols: Increased Security patrols and traffic enforcement is underway.
• Community awareness: Regular community education and awareness campaigns focused on safe and responsible driving will continue.

These initiatives are necessary and part of a broader commitment to protect all road users and prevent serious injuries or fatalities.
